Fire Restoration & Renovation of a Classic Northeast Cedar Shake Home

In 2023, this traditional two-story Northeast residence—distinguished by its classic cedar shake siding and a charming semi-enclosed wrap-around porch—presented a rare opportunity for comprehensive transformation following significant fire damage.

Our studio was commissioned to lead a full-scale architectural and interior renovation, addressing fire remediation while reimagining the home with modern livability, code compliance, and timeless elegance. Spanning from attic to basement, our work began with an in-depth damage assessment, followed by a tailored plan to restore and elevate the home’s structure and spirit.

A critical component of this  fire renovation involved the removal of a series of unpermitted modifications, particularly in the basement. These legacy alterations—remnants from the property’s use as a long-term rental—compromised both safety and integrity. Our design approach included a complete overhaul of the shared entry vestibule serving this two-family home, prioritizing functionality, safety, and visual cohesion.

A standout intervention was the design and construction of a new, code-compliant interior staircase connecting the main entry to the basement—replacing a non-conforming service stair that had awkwardly passed through a first-floor bathroom. This structural and architectural solution not only remedied a long-standing hazard but greatly enhanced the home’s usability and circulation.

Throughout the renovation, our team remained committed to preserving the historic charm of the property. We retained the original craftsman window trims and traditional façade details while integrating contemporary systems and materials that meet today’s standards for safety, efficiency, and comfort.
